Harvard Easily Handles the Broncos | #1 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Turnovers galore combined with long stretches of no defensive stops allowed Harvard (yes, Harvard) to win easily. Harvard had a double digit lead for most of
the game. It was an embarressing outing for the Broncos especially after the two big wins at the Cable Car.
The most shocking thing about the game is that we did not play our best five guys together (Bryant, Traz, Rahon, Foster, and Petty (until Alexander is healthy)) for the first 30 minutes of the game. KK, it was just three days ago that those five guys gave you your best wins at Santa Clara. Those five guys did not play together until we were 11 points down and there was only 9:30 remaining in the game. The five cut the lead in half but with only 9:30 to go, you are asking for a miracle. If we are going to lose lets at least do it with our best players on the court. Embarressing! |

I concur with junkie in terms of the rotation, but I'd include Dowdell, who played superbly against Belmont. SCU out shot and out rebounded the Crimson,
who turned only the ball over 6 times. Where was the ball pressure?

Just when you thought they might be pulling it together. Unfortunate.

I think the bottom line is that we'll be very dangerous at home, but very inconsistent on the road. Not too surprising from a young team such as ours.

HARVARD 73, SANTA CLARA 68
Lin and Crimson come up bigBryant, Broncos denied by HarvardJudging from the size of Santa Clara's starting lineup, which was anchored by senior center John Bryant, a 6-foot-11-inch, 275-pound behemoth, the Harvard basketball team seemed to be at an obvious disadvantage from the opening tap of last night's nonconference game at Lavietes Pavilion. As far as Crimson coach Tommy Amaker was concerned, it wasn't the size of his players that concerned him as much as the size of the fight his team was prepared to put up against their visitors from the West Coast Conference. "We were undersized, but we were very scrappy," Amaker said after Harvard (7-6) posted a 73-68 victory over Santa Clara (7- Last night, it was Jeremy Lin, a 6-3 junior guard, and Doug Miller, a 6-7 junior forward, who rose to the occasion by combining for 32 points and eight rebounds. Lin, despite being hobbled by an ankle injury, led the way for Harvard with 17 points and nine assists to one turnover, while Miller, whose job it was to contend with Bryant, chipped in 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot. "Everybody came ready to play," said Lin, noting the contributions of Drew Housman, who scored 16 points, freshman Peter Boehm, who had 13 points, and Andrew Pusar, who drilled a trey in front of Harvard's bench that gave the Crimson some breathing room, 64-53. "I definitely think that this is the best team effort that we've had this year, and that's something to build on." Freshman Kevin Foster led the Broncos with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4 of 7 from the 3-point line, while Bryant, who was plagued by foul trouble, had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots. "It's really frustrating for us, because it's not the first time it's happened, but it's almost seemingly impossible to get a fair shake for John when he doesn't have equal size on the other end," said Santa Clara coach Kerry Keating. "I think this might be the first game he's ever played where I've coached that he's not shot a free throw, so that's disappointing." But, as Keating pointed out, it had nothing to do with his team committing 20 turnovers, while Harvard had just six. "All of us really valued the ball, especially at the end when they were pressing us a lot," Housman said. "But we kept our cool." Harvard's lead grew to 12 points (20- Bryant snapped the Broncos out of a scoring drought of 4:14 when he posted up Miller and converted a lefthanded jump-hook. Miller answered by combining with Lin on another pretty backdoor cut that made it 22-10. "It was like you draw it up," Lin said. Bryant threw down a rim-bending dunk that sparked a 13-8 run and enabled the Broncos to close within 30-23 on Foster's transition layup with 3:47 to go in the first half. Santa Clara continued to pressure Harvard, converting 4 of 6 foul shots and getting a pretty finger roll from Australian forward Ben Dowdell to close to 31-29 at halftime. After Santa Clara went up, 35-33, early in the second half, the Crimson went on a 14-2 run. The Broncos came back to pull within 54-50, but Harvard answered with a 10-3 run, capped by Pusar's trey. "They're a big ball club, a big team, and a very good team," Amaker said. "So what do we have to do to offset that? Quickness, energy, scrappiness, being gritty, fighting, clawing, going after loose balls, blocking out, all the blue-collar kinds of things, and our kids did that. "In order for us to be a successful team, we're going to have to be able to do that night in and night out." |

Scouting Report Game Plan
Even though the Broncos have had to travel a long distance for this game, the Crimson still have no match for Bryant in the paint so expect another big effort from the big man in the middle. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Santa Clara 86, Harvard 64 01/02 10:23:07 ET
NCAA Game Summary - Santa Clara at Harvard
Final Score: Harvard 73, Santa Clara 68 Cambridge, MA (Sports Network) - Jeremy Lin scored a team-high 17 points for the Harvard Crimson as they knocked off Santa Clara, 73-68, in a non- conference battle at the Lavietes Pavilion. Lin finished the game with nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals, leading Harvard (7-6) in all three categories. Drew Housman added 16 points in the contest, while Doug Miller and Peter Boehm also finished in double digits, recording 15 and 13 points, respectively. Kevin Foster led Santa Clara (7- Harvard led by a 31-29 margin at the break, shooting 40 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc. Santa Clara hung in with a 57.6 shooting percentage from the field but only knocked down 57.6 percent from the free throw line. In the second half, Harvard shot 44.4 percent from the field and hit 83.3 percent from the charity stripe. The Broncos connected for 50 percent of their three-point shots in the second half, but five missed free throws, allowing the Crimson to walk away with the five point victory. Despite the loss, Santa Clara outrebounded Harvard by a 42-24 margin. 01/02 22:24:11 ET |

Play Your Best Five | #7 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Good to see some activity on BroncoHoops today. With regard to jcardoza77, Dowdell is playing better, "finally", but he is not playing better than
Traz. If you want Dowdell in the line-up, we can easily send Santos back to the Santa Clara recreation league where he belongs. Santos is a good kid but no
game at this level. With Alexander out and you want to play Dowdell, the best five are Bryant, Traz, Dowdell at the three, Foster, and Rahon at the one. KK
any thinking outside the box would lead you to this line-up, though we haven't seen it yet. This big line-up will be important against Gonzaga. KK, I
just thought I would give you a head start for your game plan against the Zags. Just remeber, I thought of it first.
Lets get a win tomorrow. |

I agree that JB, Traz, Dowdell, Foster and Rahon are the best players at this time. The only concern with playing both Traz and Dowdell concommitantly is the
limitation of their offensive game, which would allow their defenders to sag and double Bryant. Maybe they would cancel that out with their defense and
rebounding. Certainly worth a shot. Too bad D.White hasn't lived up to what ws expected of him: a small forward who could board, pass and have solid
offensive game would be a boon right now. I know K2 is still looking at threes for the near future.

bbjunkie, I agree that those 5 are mostly the best players that we have. I really liked Petty's game when I saw him live in the Belmont game. At the same
time, I completely understand the concerns about his turnovers. Turnovers are what kill you each and every game. However, I think KK knows what he's doing.
Have you considered that he maybe wants to spread out the talent with the first and second units? I really do think this is the case. And I believe KK starts
Santos because of his effort. Anybody can see that he just isn't as talented as Rahon or Foster, but he consistently gives good effort. Good programs need
guys like this. We were terrible in the 1st half of the Belmont game solely for a lack of effort on the boards and defensive end. This completely changed
after halftime and we dominated.
I understand your frustrations. We all have them. It's part of being a Bronco fan. Stay with us though. Keating knows what he's doing. He's bringing in more talent than Davey ever did. He will lead us to the promised land. As you said, let's get a win tomorrow (well, today where I'm at). GO BRONCOS!!! |

nice to see so many Santa Clara fans there, we were definitely louder than the Harvard crowd
Harvard outplayed Santa Clara, although Santa Clara could have escaped with a win. The Broncos had the momentum going into halftime going on the run to cut Harvard's lead down to 2 and even took the lead early in the second half, then the refs made some questionable calls for at least 4 straight possessions which killed the Broncos momentum. However the main reasons for the loss were the horrible interior passing (usually bounce passes that led to turnovers) and a defense that left a Harvard shooter open for three pointers (which they never seem to miss when open). Dowdell and White played better than the final stats show. Rahon had a really bad game, hopefully just a blip in what may be a promising SCU career. Petty needs to relax and slow it down a bit. Like jcardoza77 indicated, Foster looks to be a legit scoring threat and his potential looks bright. Harvard's Lin is from Palo Alto, CA. He's their best player and from what I saw he could definitely contribute if not star in a WCC team. Hopefully Keating will corner all the local talent going forward (sounds like getting Harrison is a great start)
