Niyi Harrison
Before its team faced Salinas on Saturday night, the Bellarmine College Prep student section at the Leavey Center chanted "This is Ni's house!"
And senior Niyi Harrison, who is headed for Santa Clara University on a basketball scholarship, indeed looked right at home, leading the Bells to a 65-36 victory in the Central Coast Section Division I title game.
It was the Bells' second title in a row and the eighth in school history.
Harrison, a 6-foot-7 forward, finished with 24 points on 12-for-14 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds.
He was hot from the start, hitting a bank shot for his first basket, then scoring in the key and again with a smooth jumper. Harrison scored 10 of the Bells' first 17 points, including a breakaway dunk. And he was just getting started.
In the second quarter, guard Kristoffer Olugbode made a steal and passed ahead to Harrison for another emphatic dunk. A minute later, Harrison made a steal and went coast to coast for a one handed-jam. Near the end of the half, he crashed the boards from the baseline and slammed in a put-back. He was 9 of 10 in the first half with four dunks.
"This is one of the last games of our senior year and we wanted to go out big," Harrison said. "I've had games like this before, but never in this kind of setting - a championship game in front of thousands of people."
