I think your post is a bit of an overreaction. Throwing stuff on the court was the action of a couple of very stupid and most likely very drunk individuals.
Santa Clara University didn't throw stuff on the court as a whole and I would guess that 99.9% of the faculty and student body condemn the action.
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. As a Gonzaga Alum and fan, I feel horrible for SCU's players who obviously played their hearts out and
deserved better from those individuals who so callously regarded common decency to the teams detriment.

Oh I totally understand what you're saying. And I also feel horrible for the players who worked hard in that game.
Haha, SCU was pretty high up on my list of potential colleges for me. But now everytime I think of SCU, all I can think of is the fans who threw stuff on the court. I know you probably don't understand why it's such a big deal to me, but respect and good sportsmanship is a big priority at my current school. We don't even boo our rival schools. The thought of having so little respect to throw something on the court is beyond me. I guess I'm just too used to the positive atmosphere I usually experience. |

As the former Santa Clara Sports Editor, I feel compelled to write something about the atrocity I witnessed this evening.
Let me first begin by stating that I love Santa Clara, and I love Bronco Athletics. However, the events that I witnessed tonight make me rethink why I ever decided to become a Bronco in the first place. I will always be a Bronco and will always love Bronco basketball...but after the poor sportsmanship and lack of respect displayed by the student section tonight, I wonder if I can ever trust the integrity of our fans again. Sure, it was a few bad apples that ruined it for everyone else, but that doesn't change the fact it happened. We are Santa Clarans...supposedly the top academic school in the conference. Yet we still couldn't manage to accomplish one simple task- letting the players take care of their business on the floor, without fan interruption. Not to mentioned we couldn't even follow explicit directions from our own Head Coach...Kerry Keating, who made it clear to not throw any objects onto the floor again. What a slap in the face. Honestly, I have never been so disappointed to be a Bronco. When I think back to my four years at Santa Clara, and think about all of the stupid things I did as a student...none of them ever involved ruining an athletes spotlight. Our athletes work every single day to compete at the highest level possible, so that ordinary students like those who bear the white t-shirts in the student section can enjoy some of the finest athletic achievements one will ever see while in college. When incidents like tonight occur, the students might as well walk right up to athletes and tell them that no matter how hard they work, and no matter how much effort the put into their sport, students still won't care. This lack of respect doesn't start with just the incidents tonight. It begins with students not attending any other games other than Saint Marys and Gonzaga. True fans would fill the student cheering section for every home game. And a cheering section is all it is supposed to be. Just because you disagree with a call, does not give you the right to take matters into your own hands. I am all for displaying your displeasure with the refs (believe me, I think that WCC officiating is at an all time low) but that doesn't give me the right to launch foreign objects into the field of play. Come on Broncos...we are much smarter than this. All this being said, I would like to issue a formal apology to all the Bronco basketball players...on behalf of the students. As an alumni, I feel it is my job to teach some of the disrespectful youth that are now carrying the torch of what used to be one of the best cheering sections in the entire West Coast Conference. Broncos: let's all learn from the mistakes we made tonight and never let it happen again. To the basketball players- I am sorry...let's prove how great of a team we are on Saturday versus Portland. Once a Bronco always a Bronco. Youth...please remember that. |

But TCSSportsEd (and damn I wish people would use real names here) is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. That was also very, very well written. Well done "Ed" (if I may call you that). But of course those who have been observing in recent years know WHY this occurred... it wasn't one of the hard-core REAL fans in that student section, the die-hards who show up for games that are not on TV - that few and proud core of maybe 30 at most.... It was certainly one/two of the wannabes for whom last night's visit by the Zags was there one game this year, one game every year. The problem isn't bad apples. The problem is lack of real basketball fans, real die-hard supporters of our teams. Oh well. The events that transpired were indeed a slap in the face for our school; which really sucks because the efforts on the court were tremendous, a huge testament to what Santa Clarans CAN be.

I feel for the SCU mens basketball players. They played their butts off last night and I believe those 4 points (or 9 if you count the points socred on the
additional possessions) put the game out of reach.

As a huge college basketball fan, I always find myself pulling each and every year for the Broncos. Just one time, I would love to see them in the post
season, ranked, or generally recognized as a strong team year after year. I did not want to have this group known for the foolish actions of a group of
students. I am excited for this team and what lays on the horizon. However, at this point in time, I feel that the "memorable moment" of this year
wont be any play made on the court, but rather the ignorant actions of some members of the crowd.

Great effort by the guys last night | #8
|
First off...great effort by the guys last night. Looks like Rahon started to get a little more comfortable towards the end of the game so hopefully that carries over to Portland. Had he been able to hit anything early on then ...what might have been. Gonzaga played well and we made them earn it. For the students who threw the items on the court, shame on them. An apology in front of the team is in order. I am already envisioning a camera zoomed in on the student section for the entire game to make sure this does not happen again...and if it does then expulsion for the person responsible. I agree with THuckaby and The Editor that this was most likely a bandwagon fan who has never been to a game against an opponent not named SMC or Gonzaga. That being said, this has happened with more basketball astute student bodies. Having spent quite a bit of time in North Carolina, I have been able to go to many games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. If I remember correctly, I know Coach K had to grab the microphone once for a similar thing (but no Techincal foul was awarded). But you better believe, it has never happened TWICE in a game there. Twinkies were also tossed on the court pre game once but it was done in more of a joking manner with the other team and this was 10 years ago. As for Keating, he manged the situation as well as you could. Thank goodness he did not do what Billy Tubbs did back in 1989. Here is a clip

the student crowd for the Portland game, in terms of turn-out and behavior. In the scheme of things it is more important than the Gonzaga game.
We shall see..... Interesting note #2: back to back Gonzaga home regular season games each end with something memorable in a very negative way. They surely do bring out the weirdness in us. |

Yep, have to give it up the the boys and KK. They played their butts off in a game where the match-ups were clearly not in their favor. You can't say that
they would have won w/o those technicals (and two LOUSY non-call goatendings), but they were in it and kept themselves in it until the end. Great, great
effort.
When will KK get that "signature" win? |

Until the real fans come... | #12
|
I completely agree with the sentiments of TSC ("Ed") and TH...it absolutely had to be the work of a bandwagon fan who only goes to the Gonzaga and
SMC games.
With that said, I think that we're hitting on what the most important point in this situation is...we need students to become "real" fans and attend as many MBB games as possible, or at least, all WCC contests. I remember going to games in the mid-90s and getting the chance to see Steve Nash play when I was in my early teens, and the student crowd was incredible. To be honest, the mid-90s SCU run went a long way towards making me want to go to Santa Clara. I loved the atmosphere, I respected the job Coach Davey did, and I identified with the "underdog"/"giant-killer" identity that the Broncos took on. Through attending as many games as I could as an undergrad, and going to plenty of games each year following graduation (2004), I've just never really been able to accept why more students don't show up. Sure, I understand that there are other things around the campus and area to do, but even with parties, going out, etc., the games start at 7 pm and are done by 9 pm. Why can't the game be a good start for a night out? And on the other hand, for many students living in the dorms or in the surrounding neighborhood, it is NOT a stretch to walk anywhere from 500 feet (Sanfilippo, Sobratos, Casa, Campisi, Graham) to less than or around 1/8 of a mile (surrounding neighborhoods, McLaughlin, Dunne, Swig), so whats keeping you from making the laughably short trek to Leavey to watch an exciting game? And yes, the games are exciting, SCU has been blessed with very watchable teams over the last decade since the heyday of the mid-90s...players from Lloyd Pierce to Brian Jones to Doron Perkins to Travis Niesen to Sean Denison to Brody Angley to John Bryant to this new crop led by Kevin Foster. Yeah, I'd like us to do better than 1-2 games above or below .500 each year, but no matter how many times we've let close (and potentially big) wins get away at home, the team has more often than not been exciting to watch and has entertained. Personally I'm tired of seeing the arena filled with students just for Gonzaga and Saint Mary's. I think the RR leadership has been making the effort to get a lot of students signed up and out to games (isn't the current # of members up to four digits? some of the past leadership is on this board so maybe they can give us some numbers)...Kit Coyle, Ian Frost, Ross Nelson, AJ Perry, Mike Zozos, Chris Bucka, Dan Galvin...all of these people and others have contributed greatly to the attempt to get more students out to games. Yet in the end, it is up to these "tweener" students to make the choice to come out to an SCU-Portland, SCU-Pepperdine, SCU-LMU game, or a non-conference game against a Pacific or Portland State in November. Over the last few years people went through the dorms, spreading the news of a game, putting up bulletins and posters in the dorms and in Benson, having a RR table in Benson. What more can you do? Like the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. As for the two jerks who cost us crucial points and possessions last night against Gonzaga, I'm all in favor of them not only being banned from attending future games, but also publishing their names in The Santa Clara's next issue and making them apologize to the team. I'm not going to go off the edge with the "this is a travesty, its the end of the world, shame-shame" talk, but I will say that all of the real SCU fans as well as the current RR leadership and the athletic department need to recognize this moment as a key one in stemming this type of behavior in the future. By standing up and making it clear that not only will we not accept or condone this type of behavior, but we'll take the appropriate actions to call you out on it and make it known that we know who you are. Congrats to the guys and KK for a hell of an effort last night. Again, made me proud to see our Broncos scrap and fight against a stronger opponent. Wish I could be in town for this weekend's games, but here's to getting it done against Portland and getting that four-seed and first-round bye. See you all in Vegas. |

Coonan's apology letter | #15

3 Campus Safety Officers?......... Unless they have upgraded the quality of that group substantially since we graduated, it's easy to understand why trouble ensued.
Why is Coonan apologizing to Few? I can understand apologizing to their A.D. and their President but why Few? Apologize to Keating not Few. How did that conversation go?

It pains me but agree with THuckaby. The Portland game is the test for the students. Perhaps this incident will wake up the student body to support the team
in an appropriate manner. I went to the Houston Baptist game and there were 12 students (I guess each player brought one friend) in attendance. I would
respect the students more if they did not show up for all games rather than just going to the big ones. It quite frankly is embarassing that Gonzaga fills our
arena but our own team cannot year after year.

Respect for KK | #19 | ||

Just listened to the KNBR interview (yes, just a few days late), and i thought KK was great. Loved the fact that he picked up the phone and called KNBR to
defend the university (e.g. .."people need to understand that that isn;t what Santa Clara is about."). I mean, he gets, what, 1 high profile
interview a year during drive time on KNBR? And he must have had to grovel to some extent to get on. He didn't run and hide, he manned up.
briefly overlooking the 10-ish and 20-ish record in games decided by 5 points or less.... |
