(that East Coast swing killed our RPI) ...

So ... we need a win over a "top half" team ... as USD and the Broncos will play the same teams from here out ... (and I can't imagine the RPI hit they took in losing to us will equal the boost we get)

probably the only way for SCU to break a tie ... is to have a better Conference record ... or a better record (then the other #4 team) over GU, Portland, and possibly?? SMC (unless they slip to or below us) -- it could be interesting ... nahhhh ... it is interesting ...

GAME NOTES: The Saint Mary's-CA Gaels and the Santa Clara Broncos are set to collide in West Coast Conference action this evening. Saint Mary's lost just one of its first 19 games before suffering back-to-back setbacks to Gonzaga and Portland. Fortunately, the Gaels got back on track with a 79-58 triumph over San Francisco on Thursday. They continue to play without Patrick Mills, as the star guard is out indefinitely due to injury. As for Santa Clara, it is riding a season-high five-game win streak, enabling the squad to improve to 12-13 overall and 4-4 in WCC action. On Thursday, the Broncos defeated San Diego by a 64-62 final in overtime, and they hope to improve their 9-2 home record tonight. Saint Mary's topped Santa Clara in a 63-62 final in a thriller on January 9th, but the Broncos still own a 130-74 lead in the all-time series.

Mills was averaging 18.7 ppg and nearly four assists per contest through the first 20 outings, so there is no question that the team isn't nearly as formidable without him. Omar Samhan is now the leading active scorer for the Gaels, as he provides 13.7 ppg and 9.3 rpg. Diamon Simpson checks in with 13.5 ppg and 10.8 rpg, giving the team a formidable front line duo. Saint Mary's is generating 75.9 ppg this season, and the club is holding foes to 63.7 ppg on 39.9 percent field goal efficiency. The Gaels connected on 50.9 percent of their field goal attempts against San Francisco on Thursday and earned a 39-30 rebounding advantage. Simpson racked up 23 points and nine rebounds in the triumph, while Samhan pitched in with 12 points.

Relatively few college basketball fans have ever even heard of John Bryant, but the Santa Clara center is one of the top players at his position in the nation. Not only is Bryant scoring 17.3 ppg on 59.8 percent shooting from the floor, he is ripping down 13.7 rpg as well. Bryant has blocked 67 shots and should definitely be considered a major candidate for WCC Player of the Year honors. Kevin Foster provides 13.5 ppg, and James Rahon checks in with 11.4 ppg. Santa Clara is averaging a modest 64.8 ppg, but the team is limiting opponents to 62.4 ppg on 40.3 percent field goal efficiency. Bryant exploded for 23 points and 20 rebounds in the narrow win over San Diego two days ago, and the big man has four games this season of at least 20 points and 20 rebounds. Defensively, the Broncos held the Toreros to 37.9 percent shooting from the floor.

Give the edge to Bryant and his Broncos this evening. They only lost to the Gaels by one point in Moraga, and Mills isn't playing this time around.

We catch the Gaels at nearly the perfect time. Portland caught them at exactly the perfect time. We are playing with confidence and we get them at home without Mills. I expect a slugfest like the USD game but more size from the Gaels. Foster will have a target on his back given the 30 plus point explosion in the first game. The others guys will have to step up. The USD game was certainly a big win but a win against the Gaels would certainly change the outlook on this season. Go Broncos!

as you can see since the post Cable Car downturn .. BIG John had been coming back with a vengence
and I'd take his 22 rbs, 15 pts and 2 blks against Portland (or his 20 pts, 15 rbs and 3 blks in regulation against San Diego)

and while folks will tend to dismiss the efforts against "lesser teams" I like to think the past four home games were tune-ups

Some thoughts on the game....

I'm gonna miss the Bryant/Samhan matchup. While JB was the winner in last night's festivities, Omar certainly has had his moments. It's also been interesting to watch their games and bodies change. They've gone from "sumo planets" colliding to skilled post players who contribute on both sides of the floor. Bryant, matched up one on one for a change, showed some of the best footwork I've seen from him. Omar will be a very tough match up for the WCC next season. Hopefully, Thompson, Traz and Cunningham benefit from a summer in the weight room and we'll see Omar and "the Load" mix it up one more time.

Foster was outstanding and as Mussellman noted, under control the whole game: no forced "heat check" shots, but as we saw in SD, no fear in taking big shots either. The freshman in general played pretty well. Traz' drive past Simpson and his rebound and dish to JB were big plays. Rahon was solid, hit a couple big shots and showed some moxing in fouling (I can't remember who) in the post rather than conceding a layup. Also had 3 assists and only one TO.

Petty wasn't as good as he was v. SD, but also had some decent moments. He forced a couple threes and turned the ball over more than he should have, but he is the one Bronco who can breakdown a defense and take it to the rim. Dowdell, along with Traz and Bryant, played solid D in the interior. As smart and well coached (from AIS) as he is, Dowdell gets into trouble forcing passes into and out of the post that aren't there. Some of his TOs seem to come from a reluctance to shoot the ball. Still hoping his "j" and confidence with it shows up, because he contibutes in so many other ways.

Weird things happen at Pepperdine, but hopefully a confident Bronco squad can come down here to the Southland and take care of business.

Awesome game! I love it when we beat the Gaels.

Not much to say really except Samhan's tat on his chest looks terrible, I kept thinking it was chest hair.

Hope for second place is still alive!

Here is a list of all things related to bronco hoops that I've been pumped about recently:

10. The "no duh" love for beating SMC...I think i've come to realize that I enjoy beating the Gaels more than any other team in the WCC...(sweeping the Donnas and of course beating GU are very sweet, too)
9. Broncos on a 6 game winning streak...
8. Broncos now have PEP, LMU, and USF on the radar going into the GU game at home. hmmm...
7. Adam Morrison was trader to the Lakers...haha gives me even more of a reason to dislike the Lakers.
6. Young Alumni BBQ/Tailgate was a blast before the game. Well organized w/ good people and plenty of beer, flip cup, and food to go around.
5. Watching Big John play. What a quiet 21 points...his game down low is so smooth. Great to see him continue to break records.
4. As everyone (including KK) has said, the fans last night were fantastic. Ruff Rider section looked/sounded awesome. Band sounded great too!
3. Watching our freshman mature infront of our eyes. What talented athletes. It's nice to see KK's recruiting abilities paying off.

You know, this has been a tough season in many ways, a lot of downs amid the ups. And I'm not pollyannish enough to think we're through with all the downs

But I've got to say it's pretty satisfying day when a) the Broncos whack St. Mary's; b) Overconfident Gaels fans are left screaming for the head of Randy Bennett; and c) Gonzaga gets spanked on national telvision.

Why not go after Musselman? What would it take to bring back Dick D.? This new guy is a loser...no wonder he was an assistant coach...go back to keeping track of fouls...loser...career loser...continuing to degrade the memory of a fine basketball program!! hey, spend a few bucks and go after Rambis...its not like the Jesuits are hurting for money in this economy...take up a second collection...SCU fans will contribute!!

What are you talking about? Did you graduate from SCU? I would be greatly surprised if that was the case because you lack the ability to make rational arguments, or for that matter, make any sense.

Are you drunk? This was a tough loss, no arguments, but I have to disagree about Keating. P'dine zoned SCU the last time they played and the Broncos filled the basket with threes. This time (due in large part to Rahon's absense, Fosters off night and Johnsons's ongoing reluctance to shoot the ball), the three's weren't falling and the Broncos struggled to get good looks for Bryant. As cardoza observed, this team doesn't have a lot of offensive options beyond Bryant, Foster and Rahon. While some of the limitations of the roster are Keating's doing, he's gotten a lot out of one quality upper classman and a bunch of sophomores and freshmen.

Also, you must be in a geriatric ward if you remember EJ (or you must be at least 50).
