It will be very difficult if not impossible for SCU to get Gonzaga like success and thus recruits. GU is the only game in town in a decent sized metro area. They are lead story on sports, get big corporate sponsors, etc. A large number of their fans are not Gonzaga alums. Everyone in town knows who the basketball players are. SCU has multiple D1 schools to compete with along...

Will they even use the two scholarships or just save them for next year? Not sure how much is out there at this point. Maybe looking International?

I don't peruse the recruting sites or scouting info, but how does info like get reversed in two days? Did Smith really change his mind (totally possible, he's a junior in high school, they change their minds like they change socks)? Was it bad info/reporting (totally possible, recruiting is a sleazy environment, rumor, statements out of context, "a source close to the family" are king)?

92Bronc is probably right, until we see the LOI, don't believe it.

That's too funny (not really). I read this the first time and almost posted, any kid who's getting that much attention isn't going to hold to Santa Clara once UCLA, etc come calling.

First George and now Smith change their mind...I guess we shouldn't get too excited until a recruit signs a LOI.

Even though Scout still shows Smith with interest in Santa Clara, I wouldn't hold my breath...I doubt there have been many recruits who ultimatly sign a LOI with the same school they previously backed out of a verbal with. Plus we're competing with BCS schools.

Hopefully Alexander will turn out to be a decent PG or maybe Foster can meet that need...

Better that the young man change his mind now than during the fall signing period. Any thoughts where the two remaining scholarships go for this period? My guess is a wing and a big.

Recently signed JC recruit Perry Petty fills the immediate need (08/09). Much like this year I suspect the backup duties will be by committee...potentials include Rahon, Foster and Alexander. If Smith is all he's cracked up to be then he may supplant Petty as the starter in 09/10.

According to ESPN's recruiting coordinator Joel Francisco, point guard Robert Smith verbally committed to Santa Clara on Monday. "Smith is widely considered the No. 1 point guard prospect in California for the class of 2009," Francisco said. "At this stage he trails only 6-3 Abdul Gaddy (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) for the best lead guard in the west."

Francisco thinks Smith had high-major potential which makes...

I posted earlier in the "Forum" section:

Robert Smith 5-11 JR PG Perris (Calif.) High, has commited to SCU. He had interest from Pac 10 schools and offers from CAL and USC.

"They offered me a few months ago and I just committed today," said Smith. "They made me feel comfortable -- it was like a family."

This is a big get for the Broncos, as Smith is currently our top-rated 2009 point guard
